I'm sure that really happened at least once in a missing scene - surely many had that same thought. ;) Still, I kind of like Julian, in that 'annoying twit' kind of way. ;)
Would have loved to have seen Joe in the Rockford Files remake--but then again, it's hard to remake an iconic show and not have it backfire on you if the material doesn't live up to the original. Since it never got out of the pilot phase, that might have been the case.

My understanding is that the actor chosen for the role ended up not being a good fit. True, it's always tough on a remake - but we live in a time of remakes and some do seem to be successful. And, it's not like Joe hasn't ever overcome less than stellar writing... I understood the show to have a crack writing staff, so I'm blaming the casting choice. Joe could pull off that Garner-ish self-deprecating, dry wit while giving it his own mark, i.e. staying true to the icon but giving it a fresh look.
Hee! You're right--Joe has given us ample opportunity to see that he exceeds the source material on every outing. :-) It's just when they reshot the pilot and NBC still pulled the plug on the show, I seem to recall the excuse given was the script itself. Maybe that was just sour grapes on my part to deal with the disappointment of this project (with Joe in it) not getting off the ground. He would have been perfect for it, and I would have loved to have seen the series get a modern treatment.
Oh hell, what am I saying? I just want Joe on my television screen every week! :-0
Julian was such a lovable little shit! I understand this wasn't one of Joe's favorite roles (he had probably worked with a few guys like Julian before becoming an actor), but he did an awesome job at bringing out Julian's character.
As for the remake... I agree you'd need stellar writing, but I think they had that from the get go and it was casting choices that didn't work. At least I'd read where they were questioning their choice for the lead. See my comment to Madison above.
LOL I never saw the show but I did see a few scenes with Julian in them on Youtube. I think the writers wanted his character to be the 'love to hate' kind. Joe made him seem more mischievous than malicious.
I like Kriadydragon's take on Julian. She wrote a Gen fic called Off The Court for First Monday. I highly recommend it and wish there were more like it.
You know... in this case, I think it would be awesome for the new Rockford to be a woman. On the other hand, I will say that Rockford is not quite as iconic a character as John Watson and leave it at that. Thinking any more on that subject makes my head ache. ;)
The few clips I've seen from this show make me glad that I didn't see any of it until long after I'd fallen for SGA. If Julian had been my first real impression of Joe, well, I'm not sure I'd be hanging out around here, you know?
Awwww, Julian is such a lovable little shit! I'm just wondering if Joe didn't draw on his real life experience working in a Republican administration for a few of Julian's character traits. Joe has said he didn't like the role of Julian, but it can't be denied that he did a pretty good job.
I believe Joe could have taken that role and made it his own while still paying homage to the icon. I would just have loved for him to have had the chance.

Annoying twit
BTW kind of ironic that he stars with James Garner given later we were all
revved up to see Joe star in Rockford

Annoying twit
I laughed when I read this. And then I imagined Julian with nothing on but the bow ties he's tied to the bed posts with.
This is entirely your fault. Thank you ;)
