Okay wait. I'm back again. I finally figured out what's bugging me the most about this photo, and some of the others I've seen from the same shoot. Well, there are lots of things that feel 'off,' but...
They got rid of all of the delicious little crinkles around his eyes! Come ON! I LOVE those! In fact, they got rid of ALL of the lovely sun-baked imperfections in his skin. Seriously, if I wanted to stare at some smooth-skinned teenager I'd be on a different comm. I like older Joe for a reason!
Yep, that's one of my main peeves with the promo shots. They're heavy on the make-up and then after the fact, they're photoshopped.
Agree with you about older Joe... I love his face the way it is now - so much character and sex appeal. I love the body hair and the freckles and the way his body is not "perfect", though he really is!
Oh, yeah, what you said... the seasoned sex appeal, the body hair *whimper* with that hint of gray... though, in my opinion, Joe's body IS freaking flawlessly spectacularly ovary-meltingly perfect.
I say that because my lifeguard husband has the exact same swimmer's build, the same lean-muscled, long limbs and torso, the broad shoulders and slim hips, etc. Even the same chest hair pattern. You couldn't get me to trade that for a more artificially-sculpted, waxed Hollywood look for anything.

Anyway. End of rant. Thanks for indulging me.
