I mean, outside of the whole handsome/sexy as hell thing.... I could sit and follow the lines and curves and play of light on that face for hours. And the coolest thing about perfection is that it's perfection with imperfections. Gorgeous!
I think because he knew there was no alternative - I put it down to having to leave Pegasus and do it while being separated from his team and the others. As for S5, I always thought it was Joe's way of playing Sheppard's arc since Elizabeth was gone. He didn't want the command because he may have felt that was the best way those not so partial to him would have to get rid of him, so he declined but took on every bit of the moral responsibility for Atlantis. If it was Joe's intent to play that progression in that manner, to become increasingly menacing, protective, worn down... I'd say he aced it. Not like TPTB were giving him any direction.
That's what I think too. That scene where they send repli!Weir to the gate is heart-wrenching, because he's completely shutting down at that point. When she was dying the first time, he got teary-eyed, but it was like he was beyond tears in season five.
The lighting was perfect... or it's made perfect by its association. ;)
I didn't look at your Sun post until I'd done this one and saw a similar shot from that scene. I'll just go with great minds.... especially when it comes to Joe.
I'd say - given that TPTB knew very little about what they wanted John Sheppard to be, and given that they offered very little direction about Sheppard's arc over the length of the series - that Joe did a remarkable job showing the changes in Sheppard from S1-3 into S4, and the progression after Elizabeth was gone into S5.

For a few moments, I would give up my sight (for a few moments!) to "feel/see" that face. Okay... obsessed status confirmed. ;)

I think those imperfections are what gives him character and makes him so damn handsome...

Exactement!!

I've nothing useful or clever to add, other than that I find 'too perfect' bland and uninteresting, and imperfectly handsome much more compelling.
Which means that, when it comes to Joe, you both have plenty of company in your obsessed status.

Still, a job on that production crew must have been one of the sweetest gigs around.
