Much has been said about Joe's ability to 'act' with a look or an inflection - truly his strong suit. A perfect example: John Sheppard's concern "written all over his face." Truer words...
I've always loved Joe's face - and not just for the obvious - it's so full of character and grace and playfulness and slow burning sex appeal. He amazes me with his ability to show all of that and more with just a quirk of an eyebrow or the set of his jaw.
My favorite scenes that show it are in Search and Rescue when John is explaining to Keller after they get him on the Daedalus why he has to go on the mission to get Teyla.
And also in Miller's Crossing when he tells Rodney that he refuses to let him be fed on by Todd.
It was a real toss-up between this scene and the one in Search and Rescue - they are so similar, that need on his face for Keller to understand. Then, with Carter, knowing that she already understood but that it was still her ass, so he says you can court martial me later... I love it.
And, wow, there are too many subtle moments in Miller's Crossing to count! Also, the Shrine was a good one - so many emotions Sheppard couldn't verbalize but really showed on his face and in his eyes.
I love the way you can see Sheppard's concern and responsibility grow and develop through the seasons. After Elizabeth, though, Joe really ramped that up with his portrayal.
A most expressive and beautiful face; it was the nuances of how he played the character that made John Sheppard so endearing ...well, the beautiful part doesn't hurt either.
I agree with the scenes mentioned as how his eyes and expressions told the story. I would also include the scene from Remnants when he realized Kolya was going to cut off his hand. The fear in his eyes looked so real...it was scary.
Agreed! And giving a nod to the directors - especially Martin Wood - they really understood this ability and used it to advantage - loved those close ups.
He also has such a dark and devilish sense of humor that I'd love to see him cast in a role where he could use all of those subtle talents plus the drama and action. Sheppard must have really been a dream role for Joe and it certainly was gratifying to see him grow into that part.
Oh, I know... me too. When he looks away, you see that flash in his eyes - McKay's not there and for just a few moments you get the feeling John is afraid to know.
There are so many reasons to re-watch SGA, but one is to mark the growth of Sheppard's character and the way Joe alone made that happen.
Odd you mention expressions he can bring on for any scene A friend and I were discussing this via email and I told her one of the funniest is how Sheppard can manage to intimate McKay just with a glance In Search and Rescue when they gear up and Sheppard is ready to pilot the jumper and McKay says something like "don't you think you had better stay behind?" (it is obvious he is NOT doing well physically)........... Sheppard turns to him with that look and McKay's voice trails off and he says "Or maybe not"
Exactly! It's like them being able to finish each other sentences. And that look is exactly what I mean about subtle... even "WE" know what those looks mean. Joe pulls that off brilliantly.
Joe can certainly do subtle. His expressions can tell the whole story. All you need is Joe, a good director, a reasonable script, and stand back, you've got a hit!
I couldn't agree with you more! I think that's one of the reasons I missed Martin Wood so much. The way he chose camera angles, close ups, and the cuts from one to another - see so many cuts from John to Rodney to John for reactions - wall all the missing text and subtext needed to present the 'entire' episode. Not saying the other directors couldn't or didn't, just that Wood was sooooo good at it. He really knew how to take advantage of Joe's ability.
